Basia Bulat | Tall Tall Shadow

If you already know Basia Bulat, then you’ll feel a comfortable familiarity with her latest release, Tall Tall Shadow, almost immediately.  If you don’t, then I recommend going back and starting with her first release Oh, My Darling, not because Tall Tall Shadow is less accessible (it is), but because Basia’s growth as an artist is worth following.

Aeon Attire

We love creative Canadians flying the flag, and these three Toronto teens are doing just that. Started by an Indiegogo campaign for AEON Sunnies, Weiming Yuan, Wei Dong Yuan, and Patrick Lum created unisex accessories brand AEON Attire last summer, and have since expanded to include hats, pant tapers, beanies, tank tops, belts and decorative studs and spikes.

FOCUS | Lily and Lilac

What’s the best way for young female photographers to make it in the competitive fashion industry? Dive right in and follow your dreams, say twin sisters Lily and Lilac, high fashion photographers making inroads on the scene. They decided to do just that and leave their native Montreal for Toronto to live and work in the heart of Canada’s busy fashion district.

Stephen Dunn | Life Doesn't Frighten Me

We’re putting it out there; we think this talented Canadian filmmaker is going places. Dunn is currently riding high from his success at the Tribeca Film Festival, with his award winning (Student Visionary Award 2013) short film Life Doesn’t Frighten Me, starring Canadian legend Gordon Pinsent, as well as boasting Rick Mercer as producer and an entire soundtrack by Sufjan Stevens. Dunn, a Newfoundland native, Toronto-based creative is the youngest person ever selected for TIFF, and already a TED speaker, we’re sure this 24-year-old is destined to be a cinematic superstar.

Trashswag

We all know that phrase “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” and now there’s an easy way to turn that into reality, thanks to Toronto’s new online crowdmap Trashswag. Started by Gavin Cameron and his friends who are “into salvage” and restoring old furniture, they turned a hobby for their small group of friends into something the whole city can be involved in. It’s a site to encourage people to reuse things and take discarded materials and turn them into something new.

Each year, TIFF exhibits some of the best up-and-coming, first feature filmmakers in the industry with their Discovery Programme, sponsored by Grolsch. To show their support of emerging filmmaking talent, Grolsch launched the annual Grolsch Film Works Discovery Award at last year’s TIFF.
