Fancey Releases Proper 70s Pastiche "Baby Sunshine"

Artists like to make a statement. For better or worse this can be dictated by the state of the world at that moment and for the most part these statements tend to fall on the grandiose side of things and often come with big moral and social implications. In the world of popular music it’s refreshing when an artist realizes not everything they put out needs to carry the world's weight. A pop song can just be a pop song. When it’s done right it can lift that weight and make it feel like the sun is shining brighter than it had been before you hit play.

Luckily for us Vancouverite, and New Pornographer, Todd Fancey gets his pop songs right.  With the release of his new single “Baby Sunshine” off the forthcoming Love Mirage album, Fancey doesn’t ask any big questions. Over a marvellous Stevie Wonder indebted harmonica solo and bouncing Rhodes piano he coos at the baby sunshine, “come out.”  It all sounds like a throwback to the golden years of 70s AM radio but it feels so fresh and vibrant and Fancey manages to make it his own. There’s no cynicism on display here just a ton of care.  As we reach the climax of the chorus Fancey sings, “I miss you and that’s all I wanted to say” and sometimes, in this case especially, that’s saying enough.
