It probably all started as a joke, like some of the best ideas do.
Get some up and coming rappers and producers to collaborate on a 5-track rap album all about Hamburger Helper. A marketing team researched and found some talented guys to work on it, they all had a few beers, and laughed about it together. Sometime down the line, it stopped being a joke.
Today, streaming on SoundCloud, there is a 5-track album that offers a spot-on pastiche of the hip hop genre. It wears its influences on its sleeve-- the first track, "Feed The Streets" sounds like a Kendrick Lamar or Lupe Fiasco b-side. It also features one of my favourite lines I've ever heard in a cooking-themed rap track: "All these haters salty/I'm too seasoned, homie". The rest of the tracks range from a hyper-produced Kanye-West-sounding track, to "Food For Your Soul", a song that could have been released in the mid-90's by Jurassic 5. There's even a slow jam.
You'll start listening to Watch the Stove as a joke too.
And then, midway through the album, you'll realize that the the intro to "Feed The Streets" offers more of a perfect review of the entire album than I ever could.
Click, click, fire.
