Humans - "Water Water" (Mesa Luna Remix) Premiere

In advance of their first hometown show in a long while (this Friday, September 9th, at The Imperial) Vancouver’s dance floor heroes HUMANS have exclusively shared the seductive new remix of their single “Water, Water” by local electro faves Mesa Luna.

An enigmatic tone is immediately set with a huge snare clap and a jumpy kick drum that meshes into a heavy and pulsing arpeggiated synth. It’s not unlike something you would hear kicking off an early 80s Depeche Mode jam, but simple genre exercise this is not. When the familiar vocals of the original come in so does clarity, as the song, without building, steadily grows with the inclusion of layers upon layers of keys and a Sheila E-esque magnitude of percussion. The changes sneak up on you and you’ll find yourself bopping your head before you even realize. The whole endeavor doesn’t reinvent the original; it sharpens it. The lights seem lighter and the darks, darker.

Mesa Luna has captured HUMANS at that time of night when the party has just let out and you’re still feeling the adrenaline from all the fun. It’s not a dance floor anthem but a hymn to the sunrise, coming down, on the long walk home.
