The Local With TO-Based Fashion Designer Matthew Gallagher

Born and raised in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Gallagher moved to Milan at 21 and enrolled in design school at Istituto Marangoni. He completed his studies in Design in 2012 and went on to work as a costume designer for Ubisoft. After his schooling in Italy and other industry experiences, he debuted his eponymous women’s wear luxury brand in March, 2013. More recently Gallagher competed in the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s TFI New Labels competition, winning the grand prize for most promising new label. Gallagher has dressed Elisha Cuthbert and Lady Gaga as well as having two features with Vogue Italia’s Vogue Talents and one with Women’s Wear Daily. He has been featured in countless publications including Elle Canada, Flare, FSHN Unlimited, SCHON, Fashion, Huffington Post, and two Globe and Mail Style section covers. Gallagher has also been featured on E! News, Etalk, CTV News, and Canada AM.

Where do you live?

I live in Toronto at Yonge & Bloor

Favorite breakfast spot?

I love breakfast at WISH. It is in my neighborhood and has a really romantic, effortlessly chic decor and the food is always delicious.

Favorite late-night eats?

Nothing beats the convenience of 7 West Cafe. It is open 24 hours and that is perfect for a late night of working.

What are some of your favorite things to do in the city?

I love taking a bike ride through Rosedale for some real estate porn and walking around the West End for the endless options of restaurants and cute shops.

Where is your go-to place for clothes shopping?

I enjoy the convenience of the Eaton Centre, especially in the colder months. Everything you need is under one roof. 

Drink of choice?

Negroni.

Favorite local gallery or artist?

The ROM has some great exhibits and it also has a stunning exterior.

What do you love about your neighborhood?

I love how accessible everything is in my neighborhood. I can find everything I need within a short walk.

What is a spot that no longer exists that you really miss?

I loved Mr. Ciao. It was a really great Italian restaurant in the East End.

What’s a new place that you’ve discovered?

Byblos. The atmosphere is great and the food is as beautiful as it is delicious.
