Song of the Day | Pixies "Um Chagga Lagga"

One can be too precious about anything: sports, politics, dogs. It's best to stay away from that mode of worship. Here's a good example: famed grunge granddaddies, the Pixies. A few years ago they decided to get back together, and this time not just tour, but make some new songs. Well, you can imagine the dour reaction from the self-proclaimed Pixies cognoscenti when not only did the music not sound like their heroin-soaked output of yesteryear, but (GASP) featured a bass player NOT named "Kim Deal". Replacing Deal was Kim Shattuck who has since been replaced by Paz Lenchantin (and surprisingly not odds-on-favourite among us smart asses, Melissa Auf Der Maur) and if you somehow walk into this new music objectively, you might not hate it. Yes, we all grew up fans of the band and nothing will replace the feelings we used to get when listening to them, but that has nothing to do with the value of "Um Chagga Lagga". It might be more RIYL Frank Black rather that Black Francis, and it sounds slightly like it's making fun of Black Keys-y music, but it's fun and rauccous and deserves a clean mind going into it.
