Song of the Day | D.A.R.K. - "Loosen The Noose"

D.A.R.K. is a group comprised of members from two of the most romantic bands of decades past: The Smiths and The Cranberries. Andy Rourke (The Smiths’ bassist) and Dolores O’Riordan (front woman of The Cranberries) have come together with New York DJ Olé Koretsky to try something new after years of living in the shadows of their former successes. Beyond the heights of Dolores and Andy’s careers, and at what is seemingly the peak of Olé’s career, it’s no wonder that the group was too excited to wait until they wrote a good song to put their product forward. The Local With Hollerado's Menno Versteeg and Annie Murphy of Schitt's Creek

Last week in The Local, we heard from Lucky Bromhead -- the talented personal makeup artist for Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy from the hit comedy Schitt's Creek, so this week we though we'd hit up Annie and her husband, Menno Versteeg -- singer of the rock band Hollerado and owner of the indie label, Royal Mountain Records -- to hear what they had to say about their favourite things around TO.

Where do you guys live?

Menno: The Junction, Toronto.

Review | M83 - Junk

It's taken M83 almost three years to successfully steal Daft Punk's idea of making an analog-sounding, disco-tinged, back-to-basics dance album.

It's for the best, because Junk might be better, front-to-back, than Random Access Memories.

While Daft Punk's retro-dance approach brought on Chic's Nile Rodgers, and evoked images of '70s disco, Junk transports listeners to clubs full of green-and-purple neon lights, pink-and-orange sunsets framed by waving palm trees, and high-ceilinged bathrooms with cocaine-dusted mirrors strewn near the sink.

ION video: Jim Steinman - "Rock 'n Roll Dreams Come Through"

Sometimes at ION we like to revisit the past, and apologies for what you're about to experience. If you don't know Jim Steinman, he's pretty much the man who was the engine behind "Wagner Rock"; that style of music that's the aural equivalent of airbrushing a sexy valkyrie on the side of your boogie van. You can hear him on every Meat Loaf album, in "Total Eclipse of the Heart", and as a post-modern influence on ION favourites The Protomen.

Song of the Day | Ultrviolence "Better Learn How To Swim"

Most bands have that immediate touchstone, the one big influence that hangs over all their songs and jump out at the listener as a way to contextualize the group within music’s ever-expanding genre landscape. Calgary’s Ultrviolence is no exception. From the moment their new single, “Better Learn How To Swim,” begins we are confronted with some very deliberate genre tropes. There’s lead singer Nate Jespersen’s familiar baritone, an arpeggiated guitar line that is perfectly enveloped in the reverb drenched amber of early 80s post punk and that head shaking 4/4 kick drum pattern.

Song of the Day | GOAT - "I Sing In Silence"

Sweden’s GOAT digitally released their new single “I Sing In Silence” today (7” Out 5/27 on SUB POP) and it’s something new for the “tribal psych” band. Quite the organic affair, GOAT has layered clean guitars, a ton of wood-based percussion, including a super fun guiro, and a healthy dollop of flute, and crafted quite the leisurely summertime stroll.
