Tei Shi | Nevermind The End

Valerie Teicher, or better known as her moniker Tei Shi, is described as a future pop songstress from Brooklyn, via Bogota and Vancouver. Her new music video for her single "Nevermind The End" was released March 6th, and the production is as minimal as the song itself.

Minimal not only in the fact that the whole three-minute long video is shot within one room, or minimal in the amount of clothing either person is wearing, but more minimal in the amount of notice you get as to what’s about to take place. An older man sits quietly on the bed all dressed in white undies and a wife beater, while Tei Shi seductively dances against the wall before gradually moving forward to what looks as an attempt at seduction. She’s dressed somewhat as a Catholic school girl, or a dominatrix, with an outfit consisting of a white blouse, black bra, short skirt, and lacy leggings. The fantasy is yours to play out.

As things develop it appears she is in control, moving in and out, and snapping photos as the old man dances in his tightie-whities. It’s intergenerational play in the opposite direction, especially if looking at it from a sexual standpoint. The YouTube comments already are suggesting it’s creepy, or citing the video doesn’t add to the song itself, perhaps more from a position of not quite understanding what the hell is going on. Watch it a couple times and the song title “Nevermind the End” might start to make sense of who actually is in control between the two of them. Fantasy, role play, sympathy, or last call—again it’s your call to make.

This is a follow up to Tei Shi's first ever video for “M+M’s”, off her 2013 EP Saudade. As with the first, it was directed by Nicolas Pesce, and Teicher channels her inner Audrey Horne (for those who are Twin Peaks fans) with her dreamy swaying dance moves. “Saudade” is a Portuguese word with no direct English translation, and represents the deep emotional state of nostalgia and longing for a loved one who's lost. Tei Shi describes her sound as "mermaid music”, others may want to use ethereal, dreamy, sway electronica, or minimalist synth. Whatever you call it, it’s definitely fresh and different.

After playing her first set of shows at CMJ 2013 in New York, Teicher is in Austin this week for her first SXSW performances. A full listing of all gigs can be found on her Facebook page. She’s also scheduled to perform at Canadian Music Week in Toronto this coming May.
