VERONICA FALLS | WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN

The term “indie pop” is an awful thing, innit? To me, it brings up connotations of smug twenty to thirty somethings drinking tea and talking about all of those books they were “into” during university. But, once and a while, a band like Veronica Falls comes out and gives the genre a whole new meaning. Replace the tea with whiskey and replace the book talk with a perfect melody/harmony combo and you’ve got Veronica Falls: indie pop for generation-self-aware.

Guy Friday | Cycling Caps

In July 2012, Ian Bowles took it upon himself to learn how to sew. With an interest in cycling caps, Bowles started producing his very own to wear while working as a bicycle messenger in Vancouver. As Bowles skills progressed, interest from others followed and he has since then sold his colourful and multi-print caps to fellow bike messengers, as well as has had his caps appear in art shows. With the slogan "Hey Fatty, Ride Your Bike!," Guy Friday also has branched into apparel with a tee and tote.

GOLDEN GRRRLS | GOLDEN GRRRLS [album review]

In high school, kids that didn’t want to go to the pep rallies for football games would all go to the cafeteria to hang out. I get the distinct feeling that if Golden Grrrls would have ever shown up to such a gathering with their gear in hand that they would’ve really turned that mother out. This record is bouncy and fun like a well proportioned woman in a bathing suit, but it also has a certain peacefulness and sophistication to it - like if Ladybug Transistor ever got into partying.

Sign Painters [Trailer]

Sign painting is a lost art. There was a time when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. With the technology of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers, many sign painters have thrown in the towel. However, fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and that is exactly what directors, Faythe Levin and Sam Macon did.

David Schwen | Pantone Pairings

Bacon and eggs, cookies and milk, peanut butter and jelly — these are some of the food combinations that we've grown up with and love together. David Schwen has taken these and has recreated paired Pantone colour swatches — the standard language for colour communication — with commonly paired food items. A Minneapolis-based illustrator and art director, Schwen first had the idea of making Pantone chips out of real household objects, such as sponges, cardboard, and the like.
