Stay Cool

Just as you start worrying about getting old and your hey day being behind you, in comes this self-published beauty of a photography book, by LA-based photographer RJ Shaughnessy, documenting and capturing exactly what ‘youth’ means. Youth is some carefree, sun-drenched and sickeningly beautiful people frolicking around LA., kissing on top of traffic lights, shredding through Beverly Hills and catching piggy back rides from cops. We love this book.

The V. Vecker Ensemble

MORE AND MORE BANDS NOW EMPLOY THE LAPTOP. NOT JUST AS A WAY TO RECORD CHEAPLY, BUT TO ACTUALLY COMPOSE AND PERFORM THEIR MUSIC.  IN COMPLETE DEFIANCE OF THIS TREND IS THE V.VECKER ENSEMBLE, AN EIGHT STRONG GROUP THAT ENGAGES IN THAT OLD FASHIONED TRADITION OF PLAYING TOGETHER. THEY PERFORM IN THE MOMENT, LISTENING TO ONE ANOTHER AND RESPONDING IN KIND.  LEAD BY KEITH WECKER, THEY DRAW ON STRAINS OF FREE JAZZ, KRAUTROCK AND THE NEW YORK TOTALIST-ORCHESTRA SCENE OF THE EARLY 1980’S.

Select[ION] | ALTERNATIVE BASEBALL BATTING SONGS

It’s summertime, and in the summertime there isn’t much better of a spot to spend the afternoon than the ballpark. I mean, the beach is generally the first suggested, but have you ever seen what happens at the beach after dark? Just a reminder, they don’t clean the sand. The ballpark is probably the only place where you can be outside while drinking beer and shouting at the top of your lungs. And the more you do both, the more people cheer you on.

Ones To Watch | Jesse Mitchell

We asked one of the founders at Eyelevel Gallery in Halifax, who was their recomendation was of an artist to keep an eye on, and Jesse Mitchell was the artist.

So, Jesse, when did you start creating art?

I started making stuff when I was in my early twenties. I was really ill and basically bed ridden for a couple of years, I had a lot of spare time on my hands, it was the perfect situation to explore creative pursuits.

Off The Wall | Eyelevel Gallery

FOR THIS ONE TO WATCH, WE SCOURED

THE LAND FOR AN ART GALLERY WITH A DIFFERENCE. ONE OF CANADA’S LONGEST RUNNING CREATIVE CENTRES, EYELEVEL GALLERY SHOWCASES SOME OF HALIFAX’S MOST UNCONVENTIONAL ART. FOUNDED IN 1974, BY A GROUP OF NOVA SCOTIAN ARTISTS LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO SHOWCASE CUTTING EDGE WORK, THIS NON-PROFIT, ARTIST RUN CENTRE HAS KEPT TRUE TO ITS UNCONVENTIONAL ROOTS. NOT CONFINED TO AN ADDRESS, OR SOLELY THE CANVAS, EYELEVEL IS KNOWN FOR ITS ARTIST DIALOGUE, AND BREAKING DOWN THE CONFINES OF WHAT A GALLERY IS.

Hey Girl, I want you to colour me good

Ladies (and gents with man crushes), colouring books are no longer for children anymore. Mel Elliott of I Love Mel has created the Colour Me Good: Ryan Gosling colouring book. Yes, you read that right. Grab your crayons and start caressing shading in the God-like tone of Mr. Gosling as he appears dapper, sworthy, and even shirtless across 15 pages of fun.

Laetitia Sadier | Audible Utopia

In the three years since post-rock pioneers Stereolab announced an indefinite hiatus, Sadier has been keeping busy. July 24 will mark the release of Silencio, her sophomore solo offering. It’s an LP that sees the French-born, London-based artist expand on the intimate tone and songwriting style that has come to distinguish her personal work from that of her former bands, the aforementioned Stereolab, and dream pop quartet Monade.

The Art Of Uprising

When Assad sends his troops to knock down doors, break hands, or shoot people point blank, simply for expressing their beliefs using their paint, pencils, lyrics or words, it’s easy to see why artists would stop doing what they love and using it in protest against these Nazi-style attacks against creatives.
