MEDIAH | IN PERPETUAL MOTION #1

Expression being a fundamental human quality, it should come as no surprise many artists find a voice through graffiti. For Mediah, one of Toronto’s pioneer artists, his work is intended to have a spiritual aspect. “You’re supposed to feel it on the inside; it’s supposed to give something to you.” Experimenting with different mediums is what inspired his pseudonym. In his early work, he thought he could do graffiti with any medium, on any media.

Oscars 2016 - The Nominees

The nominees for the 88th Academy Awards were announced this morning, and unsurprisingly The Academy is already receiving criticism for the lack of diversity amongst its top picks, catalyzing yet another deluge of #OscarsSoWhite hashtags. Will Smith ("Concussion"), Idris Elba ("Beasts of No Nation") and Michael B. Jordan ("Creed") were all left out of the Best Actor category, as were "Creed" and "Straight Outta Compton" from Best Picture. These are among the tweets on the subject that have been #lolsob worthy.

THE EXPLORER'S BELT BAG

Whether you’re headed out to an upcoming music festival, a coffee shop, or to explore the streets around you, there’s the inevitable age-old question: What bag should I take? The Explorer’s Belt Bag by Vancouver’s Andrea Wong is the perfect answer if you’re like me and want to frolic along, hands free, without having to worry about dragging your purse along. Don’t worry, this is no polyester 80s fanny pack.

PENICILLIN BABY | SPACE-TRASH & THE END OF THE WORLD

Penicillin Baby consists of Jon Tyler Conant, Charlie Davis, Taylor Lowrance, and Wes Mitchell, who met when they eventually found themselves in Nashville, Tennessee. The band has a surprising obsession with rooftops, and Jon Tyler Conant reflects on how “in almost every city we go to, we find a way onto the roof of some tall building.
It kind of makes me feel like a little kid
again.

SYRUS MARCUS WARE | THE IMPORTANCE OF ROLE MODELS #1

“Researching and considering what people are making and what’s going on out in the world and putting together a thoughtful argument that tells a story, gives a certain point of view or suggests something by bringing together artists and works.” That’s Syrus Marcus Ware’s definition of curating. As a visual artist and community activist, the Torontonian was definitely interested in being an artist and went to school to study art history, grow his own practice and incorporate activism through his creative process.

FOCUS | Tom Nugent

Tom Nugent is fighting back. For too long he has slaved away in Hollywood’s visual effects industry, thumb-wrestling the devil, twisting digital images into unspeakable lies: soldiers in space, genderless horses, Chris Hemsworth’s abs. But not now. With his photography, Tom seeks out the honesty of genuine human moments, unmolested by technical sorcery. Sometimes he finds them within the looseness of everyday ping-ponging, that nebulous place where indigo becomes violet.
