When relocating to Fort Qu'appelle, Saskatchewan, photographer Vera Saltzman knew she was in for some cold weather, but didn’t quite anticipate how hard winter in the prairies can be. Luckily for her, and us, she made the most of it, and put the harshness and loneliness these winters can muster to some good, artistic use.

Although he's perhaps better known as seventies fuzz-rock pioneer, this not-quite-self-titled reissue by Michael Yonkers highlights another aspect of the musician's talent: simple cowboy country songs. Originally recorded in the early seventies on tube-type reel-to-reel machines, the 13 tracks feature echoing vocals, spoken word passages and sing-along choruses in Yonker's unique baritone, often made spooky by the spaciousness of the no-fi home recording techniques.

Imagine for a moment what it might be like to suddenly find yourself in a decrepit, leaky, underground sewer tunnel below an abandoned factory, in the worst part of Detroit, in the not-too-distant future. It’s completely void of light except for the occasional beam of sun penetrating the cracks in a random manhole and faintly bleeding down into the black. The place feels like an oily catacomb. A bleak maze that defies logic or reason, like it was built by an insane city planner. The worst part is you have no idea how you got there.
