What better way is there to point out a city’s complexities than to capture the obvious? LA-based photographer Thomas Alleman did just that when he created The American Apparel. Yes, a Canadian founded company (Montrealer Dov Charney is founder and CEO), American Apparel headquarters call LA home, and its choice billboard locations created an inspiringly simple and affective project for Alleman.

The Secret History | Lit-Pop

If art is the best barometer of a civilization’s condition, our neighbours south of the border may have learned more tuning into a New York radio station than during last month’s state of the union address. With some luck, they might’ve caught a song from The Secret History’s Americans Singing in the Dark. The album is a literary work in indie pop packaging, and songwriter-in-chief Michael Grace Jr.

Jesse Rose | The Whole Twelve Inches [ALBUM REVIEW]

Theodor Adorno once famously wrote, “When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.” As a lifelong student of communications theory, I take Adorno’s work very seriously and it’s taught me how to look at music through a critical lens. The same lens any creator of culture, in this case, Jesse Rose, should look through when creating a new piece of music (culture). Unfortunately his creation, The Whole Twelve Inches, is terrible. This entire record is incredibly outdated and is one giant snooze fest.

Kandle | In Flames [ALBUM REVIEW]

Blending blues and rock like singers of yesteryear, Kandle’s latest release further separates the young Canadian singer from the pack. With the release of In Flames, Kandle is cementing herself a place within the Canadian musical landscape. Her voice is haunting on “Demon” and “Gimme A Pill”, which set the tone for the album early on. Closing my eyes while listening, I can see a smoky bar with a band playing in the back.
